CRYSTALS AND GEMSTONES

Crystals come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and colours. All crystal and gemstones are living organisms and all have a life energy of their own, and are living in some manner of the word as they slowly grow in clusters.  They are all part of the mineral kingdom. Most are grown in nature but some are synthetically produced.  Many crystals are as old as our planet although some come here from outside our planet such as Moldavite and other celestial crystals. As well as being in their raw form, rocks or stones can be polished (called tumbled) and they come in every shape & size. Crystals are able to balance or amplify energy fields and thus are used in communication devices, i.e. the first radios were often called crystal sets.

SELECTING A CRYSTAL

There are a wide variety of crystals, each used for different reasons. One of the most popular reasons why people buy crystals is health-related. For example amber, when held for some time, warms on the skin, and slowly releases a unique analgesic called Succinic Acid, which especially helps with arthritic problems. Or consider lithium, a medical relaxant, which can help with sleep disorders, but which when used in its natural state in the crystal Lepidolite, avoids any of the side effects of chemical medication. A wide range of crystals exists to help with many medical ailments. Alternatively, sometimes people will buy crystals because they 'catch their eye' and they feel an immediate attraction to them. Sometimes it is the colour or perhaps it is the shape which pulls at their attention. Some people find differing crystals to be soothing, de-stressing or energizing. Other crystals are merely ornamental and extremely beautiful natural additions to your home.

CLEANSING YOUR CRYSTAL

The safest way to ‘cleanse’ your crystals is to place them on a window sill to allow light to shine on them. The most commonly recommended way to cleanse them used to be with water, often adding salt. However, not all crystals react well to water, or to salt, and you may find that they simply dissolve. Also, some fade in sunlight, so placing them on a windowsill overnight in moonlight is increasingly the most recommended way of safely looking after your collection.

DECORATIVE USES OF CRYSTALS

  • Jewellery
  • Slices of crystals can be used as book ends
  • Large clusters placed in a room look beautiful,
    especially large amethyst clusters

CRYSTALS IN HISTORY AND MODERN TIMES

History records the use of crystals as both functional and ornamental. Tibetans used them to produce light and Mayans, among others, used crystals in their statues. When we examine what modern research is uncovering regarding the full spectrum of the properties of crystals, and compare this with the knowledge of past cultures, we discover we are touching upon only the very beginnings of a vast forgotten technology. A complex sandwich of liquid crystal layers and mirrors act as light valves to create closed loops of light and moonlight signals, which correspond to a two alphabet system of information storage.

By such means, information can be stored with a density of
2,500-fold over that of conventional electrical-digital computers.
The first working model of the light and crystal computer is
scheduled to be operational within a very short time.

Gems and crystals are generally looked upon favorably, having
properties for good luck, for healing, and in aiding with psychic
abilities. The magic of crystals impressed themselves upon
humankind far back in antiquity, for we find among Neanderthal
remains dating back to 70,000 B.C. collections of quartz stones
and stone balls made of quartz crystals. Pieces of crystal have
also been found in Megalithic Cairns, and at New Grange in
southern Ireland, tiny pebbles of white granite quartz cover the
entire mound above the energy-chamber.

In the past it was recognised that wearing crystals over certain acupuncture points of the body aided in the healthy flow of physical and psychic energies. The Emperor Tsin Shi, who reigned from 259 - 210 B.C., is said to have possessed at his palace at Hein-Yang in Shensi
a mirror-like stone of crystal which 'illuminated the bones of the body' when a person stepped behind it. It was rectangular in shape, measuring four feet by five feet nine inches, and glowed on both sides. The placing of the hand over the heart somehow activated the stone, whereby the patient's inner parts were clearly portrayed, and diagnosis of illness could be obtained.

Two hundred and fifty years earlier, the Hindu sage Jivaka supposedly had a large 'jewel' which 'illuminated the body like a lamp lights up a house,' and from which nothing within could be hidden by any intervening obstacle. In like fashion, the medicine men of the Hopi Indians of the American Southwest used crystals to observe the body to tell what was causing ill health.

On the Isle of Skye near Ireland , is a chapel dedicated to St. Columbus, and on the altar is a round crystalline blue stone held sacred to weather and health. Local fishermen, to appease contrary winds, bathe this stone with water and claim good results. The stone has also been applied to peoples' sides to relieve cramps.

In gem cutting, odd number facets are said to aid in healing, while even number facets create the best energizers. In colour, red, yellow, and orange stones help to energize; clear and blue stones are healing; and lavender and blue-violet stones create tranquil, relaxing effects.
